After months of speculation whether he would retire or not, Favre returned to the field for Saturday’s preseason game at San Diego. He was treated rudely by the defense of the Chargers, but he still managed to do some good things. He finished 5-of-10 for 66 yards and he was sacked twice in about a quarter of action.

Barlow, 49ers run game gets blow
Kevan Barlow (thigh), making a bid for the starting tailback job in San Francisco, will have a little more difficulty finding running room whether he wins the job over Frank Gore or not. Center Jeremy Newberry (knee) will be placed on injured reserve and is expected to have microfracture surgery, ending his 2006 season before it started.

Vince Young sprains his ankle
Young left Saturday’s preseason game against the Saints midway through the fourth quarter due to a sprained left ankle. He was sprinting out to the left for a throw into the end zone. The pass was incomplete and he held onto the ball too long and was clocked in the flat.

Josh McCown now the No. 3 QB?
Dan Orlovsky helped lead the Lions to a touchdown on the team’s second possession in Friday’s preseason game against the Broncos. He finished 6-for-8 for 54 yards, a touchdown and an interception. McCown was 4-for-7 for 54 yards and no scores.
