NFL and NCAA Football Update… - Veteran WR McCardell signs with Redskins (AP)

October 2nd, 2007

Keenan McCardell signed with the Washington Redskins on Monday, adding depth to a team with only one healthy wideout who has caught a pass this year. McCardell has 861 career catches with Cleveland, Jacksonville, Tampa Bay and San Diego. The two-time Pro Bowl selection was cut by the Chargers after last season and nearly signed with the Redskins in July, but opted instead for Houston because he…

Pats cruise to 4-0, beat Bengals 34-13 (AP)

Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chad Johnson misses a catch in the fourth quarter of an NFL football game against the New England Patriots Monday, Oct. 1, 2007, in Cincinnati. Johnson was held to three catches for 53 yards in the game won by the Patriots, 34-13.

Tom Brady had three more touchdown passes. Sammy Morris had one of his best games. The New England defense had its way. Expect anything less? The Patriots don’t. The Patriots remained one of the NFL’s four unbeaten teams Monday night — and, so far, the best of the bunch — by beating the Cincinnati Bengals 34-13 with a performance that showed their versatility.

Bears sticking with Griese at QB (AP)
Different quarterback, same result. The Chicago Bears hoped Brian Griese would spark their offense. Instead, he was no better than Rex Grossman. Sack-happy Giants shut down Eagles (AP)
Pro Bowl middle linebacker Antonio Pierce was only half kidding, saying the New York Giants could have had 20 sacks against the Philadelphia Eagles. Daunte Culpepper took over for Josh McCown and started the second half at quarterback for the Oakland Raiders on Sunday against Cleveland. Culpepper, who played one play in the first quarter after McCown was nicked up, was greeted with cheers by the fans who had wanted him to be the team’s starter all along.

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady throws during their 38-7 win over the Buffalo Bills in a football game at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. Sunday, Sept. 23, 2007. Brady threw for 311 yards and four touchdowns in the win.

Tom Brady quickly figured out how to play with Randy Moss: throw the ball, then watch in awe. That approach led the New England Patriots to their third straight rout to open the season. The latest — and probably not the last — was a 38-7 win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday in which Moss scored on touchdowns of 45 and 3 yards.
